The J boat "whirlwind" designed by L Francis Herrishoff for the 1930 Americas cup. The original model was purchased at an auction in 1957 by Chuck Millican who was 12 years old. Chuck produced 6 models using the original model as a male mold. He and his friends finished off the boats and rigged elastic band steering so they would hold a course while they chased the boats across Plymouth harbor in their punts.

Chuck moved to Wisconsin to work for Vanguard boats and took the model with him. While in Wisconsin he  re tooled the boat and started full production, following his move to New Hampshire Chuck and Rick Meyer opened Whirlwind Models and produced just over 150 boats. Chuck then moved to Annapolis Maryland and produced another 250 boats.

Whirlwind Models had been dormant for the past thirty years while Chuck lived in Bermuda to coach the Bermuda Olympic Sailing Team. After leaving Bermuda in 2014 Chuck re opened Whirlwind Models in Bluffton SC.
